Leah Broad
Leah Broad is a writer, historian, and broadcaster. She holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford and writes about twentieth century cultural history, particularly women in music.
Quartet: How Four Women Challenged the Musical World, Leah's award-winning first book, is a group biography of four women composers: Ethel Smyth, Rebecca Clarke, Dorothy Howell & Doreen Carwithen. Her second book, Unsung: Trailblazing Women Musicians of the Second World War, won a Whiting Creative Non-Fiction Grant and will be published by Faber & Faber in 2027. Leah regularly works with performers and institutions to reach out to new audiences, using storytelling to bring classical music to life.
Leah writes for a wide variety of outlets on women's history, and on classical music. Her writing has appeared in outlets including the Financial Times, New Statesman, Guardian, BBC Music Magazine and Opera Now. She has a regular column in Choir & Organ and posts on her Substack here. Leah is also the founder of Unheard Heritage, a recording initiative to revive great, forgotten music for new audiences. The initiative takes neglected works out of the archive and brings them to life, recording with world-renowned artists to invite audiences to hear these phenomenal but forgotten works.
